ROCKO'S FOUNDATION LINEAGE

The history of the modern Welsh Pony contains a handful of very influential stallions. Rocko's lineage can be traced back to the two most influential stallions of the Welsh Mountain Pony and the two most influential stallions of the Section B Welsh Pony.

DYOLL STARLIGHT (1894 - 1929) and COED COCH GLYNDWR (1935 - 1959). are considered the foundation of the Welsh Mountain Pony. Rocko has 10 crosses to Coed Coch Glyndwr and 7 crosses to Dyoll Starlight in his pedigree.

The Section B animal registered in Volume 1 of the Welsh Stud Book was a most useful type that would carry a shepherd on his day’s work. With the increased popularity of riding by children since 1930 a finer, lighter type of pony has been developed with strong emphasis being laid on keeping the true ‘Welsh’ characteristics. The typical Welsh Section B pony of the present is the current Working Hunter Pony.

To bring this about a few stallions of slighter type containing at least 50% of the best Welsh blood were admitted to the Stud Book, the two most influential being CRAVEN CYRUS (1927) and TANYBWLCH BERWYN (1924). Both of these stallions carry the Dyoll Starlight bloodlines. Rocko has 4 crosses to Craven Cyrus and 9 crosses to Tanybwlch Berwyn in his pedigree.

CRIBAN VICTOR (1944) provided a useful outcross for the section B pony, and gained his height from his dam Criban Whalebone, of Cob parentage. Rocko has 7 crosses to Criban Victor in his pedigree.

The main expansion of Section B occurred in 1958/1959 when progeny of FS2 mares were born, i.e. four very influential sires that between them laid a very firm foundation. One of these sires was DOWNLAND DAUPHIN (1959).Rocko has 4 crosses to Downland Dauphin in his pedigree.

Welsh Ponies of Cob Type: At the turn of the century when the Stud Book was founded, there were several good sires between 12 hands and 13 hands 2 inches and these were classified into Section B of the Welsh Stud Book. Typical among these was KLONDYKE (1894). Klondyke was 12.3h and born in 1894.
He was the first prize winner and Champion Pony at the Welsh National Show in 1905. He was Re-registered as Forest Klondyke in Vol 8. Rocko has Klondyke in his pedigree.
